the Nashira Education Project

"Nashira" is Hebrew for "let us sing". Jewish learning, traditionally, was chanted; that which is sung is often more easily remembered. Song is also often an expression of joy, and we believe that children's learning should be joyful.

Kindergarten through 3rd grades

Sunday morning classes are 10am-noon; open classroom 12-12:30pm (optional)

In Jewish studies classes students learn about the rhythms of Jewish life through rituals, holidays, and Jewish values.

Hebrew Through Movement is incorporated into these Sunday morning classes--a fun and lively way to become familiar with Hebrew words and sounds before students are ready to learn decoding (reading and writing).

4th & 5th grades

Sunday morning classes are 10am-noon; open classroom 12-12:30pm (optional)

As students get older, their Jewish Studies begin to focus on what Jewish texts and ethics have to tell us about tzedakah--social and environmental justice--and finding intersections between their personal Jewish identity and how Jewish values inform their participation in community life.

Students at this age begin to learn Hebrew decoding with a tutor or teacher.
